Ash Wednesday Bulletin – February 14, 2018

Welcome – Teresa Whitney

* Call to Worship – Nathan Blackwell

Leader: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

PEOPLE: AND ALSO WITH YOU.
Leader: The season of Lent calls us to journey along the edge,
to anticipate that final trip to Jerusalem.
PEOPLE: LENT CALLS US TO THE CUTTING EDGE,
WHEN THE WHEAT FALLS TO THE GROUND
AND NEW LIFE COMES FORTH.
Leader: Lent not only calls us to give up something,
but also invites us to participate in the mystery of
God-with-us.
PEOPLE: BY YOUR GRACE, CALL US FROM GRIEF INTO GLADNESS,
DESPAIR INTO HOPE, ESTRANGEMENT INTO RIGHT RELATIONS WITH
EACH OTHER AND WITH THE EARTH.

* Opening Prayer – Nathan Blackwell

O God,
maker of every thing and judge of all that you have made,
from the dust of the earth you have formed us
and from the dust of death you would raise us up.

By the redemptive power of the cross,
create in us clean hearts
and put within us a new spirit,
that we may repent of our sins
and lead lives worthy of your calling;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

* 881 Affirmation of Faith – Jonathan Rea

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was a crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven an sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Confession based on Psalm 51

Leader: Have mercy upon us, O God, according to your loving kindness. In your great compassion blot out our offenses.

PEOPLE: WASH ME THROUGH AND THROUGH FROM MY WICKEDNESS
AND CLEANSE ME FROM MY SINS,
FOR I KNOW MY TRANSGRESSIONS, AND MY SINS ARE EVER BEFORE ME.

Leader: Against you only have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight. So you are justified when you speak and upright in all your judgments.

PEOPLE: PURGE ME FROM MY SINS, AND I SHALL BE PURE WASH ME, AND I SHALL BE CLEAN INDEED.

Leader: Hide your face from our sins and blot out all our iniquities. Create in us a clean heart and renew in us a right spirit, O Lord.

(SILENT PRAYER)

Leader: Give us the joy of your saving help again, and sustain us with your bountiful spirit.

PEOPLE: OPEN MY LIPS, O GOD,
AND MY MOUTH SHALL DECLARE YOUR PRAISE.

Leader: Lord God, you are the one who forgives us and teaches us
what is right and shows us the way we should go. You are the one who
provides us with all that we need and protects all those who callupon your name.
Help us O God to remember your unfailing
love, to give thanks for your forgiveness and your mercy, and to
rely upon your saving and healing power. For these and all
our blessings, help us now to praise you with thankful and contrite
hearts, we ask it in Jesus’ name.

ALL: AMEN.

Prayer of Thanksgiving – Rev. Cathy Partridge
All things come from you, O God,
and with praise and thanksgiving we return to you what is yours.
You created all that is, and with love formed us in your image.
When our love failed, your love remained steadfast.
You gave your only Son Jesus Christ to be our Savior,
that we might have abundant and eternal life.
All that we are, and all that we have, is a trust from you.
And so, in gratitude for all that you have done,
we offer you ourselves, and all that we have,
in union with Christ’s offering for us.
By your Holy Spirit make us one with Christ, one with Each other,
and one in ministry to all the world;through Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray:
