WELCOME: Introduction of your New Pastor

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;*

the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven,

and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

SONGS: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
My Holy Shepherd
SERMON: Searching for the Perfect Church
“I know your works, your labor, and your endurance. I also know that you don’t put up with those who are evil. You have tested those who say they are apostles but are not, and you have found them to be liars. You have shown endurance and put up with a lot for my name’s sake, and you haven’t gotten tired.
But I have this against you: you have let go of the love you had at first. So remember the high point from which you have fallen. Rev. 2:2-5a
“… seek 1st the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” Matthew 6:33
God’s condemnation of Eli, these words stuck out: “you… honor your sons above me” I Samuel 2:29
Jesus said something like that:“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Matthew 10:37

Change your hearts and lives and do the things you did at first. If you don’t, I’m coming to you. I will move your lampstand from its place if you don’t change your hearts and lives. If you can hear, listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. I will allow those who emerge victorious to eat from the tree of life, which is in God’s paradise. Revelation 25:2-7.

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. Rev. 22:2-3
BENEDICTION: Let the majesty of the Father be the light by which we walk,
the compassion of the Son be the love by which we walk,
the presence of the Spirit be the power by which we walk. AMEN

SONG: I am the Church, You are the Church

Spirit of the Living God

SERMON: Searching for the Perfect Church

After their release, they returned to their brothers and sisters and reported everything the chief priests and elders had said.  They listened, then lifted their voices in unison to God in prayer.. After they prayed, the place where they were gathered was shaken. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking God’s word with confidence. Acts 4:23,31

The community of believers was one in heart and mind. None of them would say, “This is mine!” about any of their possessions, but held everything in common.  The apostles continued to bear powerful witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and an abundance of grace was at work among them all.  Acts 4:32-33

(1) Ephesus – hard workers, full of endurance, haven’t put up with evil BUT have forsaken its first love and forgotten the basics of what made them great to begin with … but PARADISE awaits (2:4).

 (2) Smyrna – a church that suffered hardship and hurtful things spoken about them and more suffering was yet to come BUT THEY WILL RECEIVE THE CROWN OF LIFE (Rev. 2:10)

 (3) Pergamum – they kept their faith in the midst of bad circumstances but they worshipped false idols and were sexually immoral and needed to repent BUT THEY WOULD EMERGE VICTORIOUS (2:16).

(4)Thyatira – a strong, faithful, loving church with good works and endurance but who wouldn’t condemn a false prophetess.  BUT THEY WOULD HAVE AUTHORITY OVER NATIONS. (2:20).

(5) Sardis – the church thought they were alive but were “dead; they had fallen asleep. BUT THEIR NAMES WOULD BE IN THE BOOK OF LIFE (3:2).

 (6) Philadelphia – the church that had endured patiently and done good works and kept their faith even though they had little power. THEY WILL BE PILLARS IN THE TEMPLE OF GOD  (3:10).

(7) Laodicea – the church with the lukewarm faith. BUT THEY WILL SIT WITH JESUS ON HIS THRONE (3:16).

BENEDICTION: As we go from here, help us to experience your favor, oh God! Allow us to rest in the peace that comes from the One who is, who was, and who is yet to come! To Him be glory and power, forever and ever.  Amen.

9-3-17 It’s Not Fair! A Fair Wage Matthew 20:1–16

SONGS: God Bless the USA

Today NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER for people affected by floods …how wonderful to live in a country where our President and our Governor go to God in PRAYER … let us join together in prayer as we pray together for:

Pray for People in the Flooded Areas

  • Safe transportation to and from flooded areas as they try to get back to their homes
  • Dry, comfortable lodging, safe drinking water, and nutritious food for those in shelters
  • Long-term housing for those who have lost homes

Pray for Rescue Efforts by First Responders/Emergency Personnel

  • Good, reliable communication between non-profit & government agencies
  • Safety for police officers, firemen, and emergency medical personnel
  • Strength, stamina and wisdom as they continue to respond to the overwhelming need
  • Additional manpower from outside the area to meet the still ongoing needs

Pray for Ongoing Relief Efforts (which will last for MONTHS to come)

  • Plenty of volunteer teams and government groups to respond to the overwhelming needs
  • Physical strength and stamina for the disaster relief teams
  • Coordination of all volunteer efforts
  • Enough resources – money, supplies, equipment, food, and water – to meet the needs
  • Protect the resources from theft, fraud, and accident

Pray for Physical Conditions

  • Protection from additional rain and tornadoes
  • Open passages for built up/backed up water to safely drain away
  • Clear roadways for emergency personnel
  • Speedy infrastructure rebuilding so recovery can begin quickly

BIRTHDAYS: No birthdays?

KIDS:  next Saturday night is MOVIE NIGHT and we’re going to be developing future LEADERS for the church (HA HA) … kids will be watching BOSS BABY and having pizza – please make a donation for dinner and popcorn.

WE ALSO WANT TO THANK those of you who volunteered to teach a Sunday school class – again, parents, your kids will LOVE seeing you support them on their faith journey, but our kids need to see ALL of us as role models and REAL leaders. Without good teachers, kindergartner kids have to be with 5th graders and obviously the activities and lessons are MUCH different with such a broad group. AGAIN, thanks to all of you doing your part.

  • Next Sunday fall kicks off in a big way … Caddo Mills United Methodist Church IS a place to belong and we want people to KNOW that! If you have not been seeing our Facebook posts, please LOOK for them and SHARE on your pages … this is our INVITATION to the community and the word spreads exponentially when more and more people share on THEIR pages!
  • There is also an EVENT created for next Sunday posted so please RSVP – events don’t look very exciting when only a few people RSVP so please RSVP and invite others
  • We pay $30 to BOOST some posts which means Facebook puts it at the top of the newsfeed so it gets more exposure … we can CHOOSE the age group and geographic radius. For example, this post (the 1st in a series) was VIEWED 1,056 people, had 36 LIKES but only 1 share .. had more people SHARED the post, that number would be HIGHER and with more meaningful reach because it would reach friends of YOURS
  • All of that is GREAT but PERSONAL INVITATION is, of course, always better than an impersonal Facebook post … so reach out to people who DON’T have a church home!
  • Lots of things get started this week … unless it’s a special event, like our DINNER and DREAMING on the 13th, childcare is not available unless you tell Pastor Debbie you need it – she needs 48 hours please!
…Friday morning Bible studies starting Friday the 8th  and we ARE looking for childcare … we’d love a volunteer but we DO pay nursery worked so please let me know if you’d like to help for an hour and a half or you know someone who wants to make a little bit of money!

…Adult Sunday school starts back at 9:45 next Sunday in the Education Building … no one has told us they need childcare so if you do, now is the time!

…And we’ll keep reminding you to make SEPTEMBER 13th a PRIORITY as we have an all church dinner and dreaming night to discern what God has planned NEXT for us!
… Adult Kids are in for a TREAT because the CREW is hosting the next dinner and GAME night on September 16 … RSVP to Brenda WILLIAMS please!

SONG: Laborer’s in the VINEYARD (To the Tune God Be the Glory)

Confession and Pardon

ALL: God of fruitful labor, at home, at school, in the workplace, even in our relationship with You, we too easily question what others do and get, instead of taking care of our own business. Take away our bitterness. Teach us the art of the careful criticism and give us grateful hearts, we pray. AMEN

We do not presume to come to Your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in Your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy to even gather up the crumbs under Your table but You are the same Lord, who delights in showing us unlimited mercy and grace. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, Your invitation to come to the Table your dear Son Jesus Christ, to eat and drink at this banquet laid out specifically for us!

Words of Assurance

Hear the good news:

what we do does matter,

but our salvation is a gift from God.

God hears our complaints,

but He also hears our prayers

and He will never leave us.

ALL: In Christ’s name, we are forgiven. Amen.

SONG: REVELATION SONG … during song, kids  return to sanctuary

BENEDICTION: We go out from here as workers in God’s upside-down kingdom, where the last are first and the first are last, where needs are met in miraculous ways, and there is grace enough for all!  May the blessing of God, the love of Jesus Christ, and the presence of the Holy Spirit surround us and sustain us in the coming days. Amen.

VIDEO  Signs of Forgiveness

SONG:Grace Greater Than Our Sin

SERMON: The Math of Forgiveness  Matthew 18:21-35

Parable of the unforgiving servant

21 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, how many times should I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Should I forgive as many as seven times?”

22 Jesus said, “Not just seven times, but rather as many as seventy-seven times.[a] 23 Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle accounts, they brought to him a servant who owed him ten thousand bags of gold.[b] 25 Because the servant didn’t have enough to pay it back, the master ordered that he should be sold, along with his wife and children and everything he had, and that the proceeds should be used as payment. 26 But the servant fell down, kneeled before him, and said, ‘Please, be patient with me, and I’ll pay you back.’ 27 The master had compassion on that servant, released him, and forgave the loan.

28 “When that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him one hundred coins.[c] He grabbed him around the throat and said, ‘Pay me back what you owe me.’

29 “Then his fellow servant fell down and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I’ll pay you back.’ 30 But he refused. Instead, he threw him into prison until he paid back his debt.

31 “When his fellow servants saw what happened, they were deeply offended. They came and told their master all that happened. 32 His master called the first servant and said, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you appealed to me. 33 Shouldn’t you also have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ 34 His master was furious and handed him over to the guard responsible for punishing prisoners, until he had paid the whole debt.

35 “My heavenly Father will also do the same to you if you don’t forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

 SONG: Great is Thy Faithfulness

BENEDICTION: As we have been forgiven, we now go into a world that needs our forgiving, healing touch. May we always bring peace and hope to others, sharing God’s love with them. AMEN.

SONGS: Tell Me the Stories of Jesus

Come Thou Fount

When Moses was 120 years old, the people were FINALLY ready to enter the land of milk and honey, they camped “by the Jordan across from Jericho” (Numbers 36:13) … they were in, what is now the land of JORDAN, but from the mountaintops, the Promised land, which we now know as ISREAL, was oh sooooo close!

Why was this admonition important to Moses? So that “you and your children and your children’s children may fear the LORD your God all the days of your life” (Dt. 6:2).

These words that I am commanding you today must always be on your minds. Recite them to your children. Talk about them when you are sitting around your house and when you are out and about, when you are lying down and when you are getting up. (Dt. 6:6-7)

Israel, listen! Our God is the LORD! Only the LORD! Love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your being, and all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:4-5) This is the essence of what God seeks from His people!!

Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. (Deuteronomy 34:10-12 NRSV)

 SONG: Pass it On

BENEDICTION: When it comes to scriptural benedictions, most people are familiar with this one. God specifically told Moses to pass this down to Aaron as a blessing to speak over Israel. It’s endured as a standard of benediction because it’s not only easy to remember, but it’s filled with power and beauty.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24–26

8-6-17 EXODUS: Lessons from the Wilderness

OFFERING:Loving Father, you powerfully fill the voids in our lives and You reveal your compassionate grace by the simple act of always being present.  You unselfishly feed us when we are hungry and thirsty and quietly walk with us when we feel alone.  Combine this offering with others so that all of Your children can be filled with the power of Your redeeming spirit.  In Jesus’ name, we pray.  Amen.

SONGS: Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

“They that wait upon the Lord, shall renew their strength. They shall rise up on wings like Eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

“ALL things work together for good to those who love the Lord, who are called according to His purposes.” Romans 8:28

Oh, how we wish that the LORD had just put us to death while we were still in the land of Egypt. There we could sit by the pots cooking meat and eat our fill of bread. Instead, you’ve brought us out into this desert to starve this whole assembly to death. (Exodus 16:2-3)

“Why have you treated your servant so badly? And why haven’t I found favor in your eyes, for you have placed the burden of all these people on me? . . . I can’t bear this people on my own. They’re too heavy for me. If you’re going to treat me like this, please kill me.” (Numbers 11:11, 14-15)

“We entered the land to which you sent us. It’s actually full of milk and honey, and this is its fruit. There are, however, [don’t you hate that word!] powerful people who live in the land. The cities have huge fortifications” (Exodus 13:27-28).

“We can’t go up against the people because they are stronger than we . . . All the people we saw in it are huge men  . . . We saw ourselves as grasshoppers, and that’s how we appeared to them.” (Number 13:30-33)

“Take the staff, and … speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.”  “So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as He commanded him and said ‘Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?’ Then…he raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.” Numbers 20:9-11

“Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them” (Numbers 20:12).

For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 1 Corinthians 10:4

Refreshing, renewing, resurrecting Lord of the waters,

ALL: Forgive me.

Forgive us for becoming stagnant in our spiritual lives. What once were living waters has now become dark and dirty, certainly not clean enough to drink.

ALL: Forgive me.

Forgive us when we rush the rapids so violently from one task to the next and never see the scenery or hear Your voice above our own foamy waters and roaring waves.

ALL: Forgive me.

Forgive us when our banks overflow by taking on too many things that replace You as our priority, threatening to drown those around us with all our selfishness.

ALL: Forgive me.

Forgive us for not returning to You when we dry up, trickle, barely move in the dusty dry cracks of our own river beds.

ALL: Forgive me.

Fill our dead, empty pools with abundant life again.

ALL: Refresh us.

Slow our rapids to the pace You intend.

ALL: Renew us.

Train our tributaries to flow from You and not the chaos of stormy life.

ALL: Restore us.

Show us where You want us to go.

ALL: Redirect us.

Resurrecting Lord of the waters, hear our repentant prayer in this moment of silence we pray. SILENCE

People of God: the Good Lord of the Waters has heard your prayer. May the peace of Christ be upon you now. Amen.

SONG: LET US BREAK BREAD TOGETHER: Jason will get the children will return to sanctuary

COMMUNION: Breaking of the Bread

BENEDICTION: God of the covenant, we give thanks for your enduring presence in our lives. Help us to be aware that you are with us in our wilderness wanderings and please, Lord, walk alongside us, both in our wanderings and as we seek to be ever closer to the Promised Land. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen

OFFERING … Almighty God, Your boundless miracles in nature are such a small display of Your awesome deeds.  You visibly enrich our lives with the bounty of the earth’s beauty.  How can we ever adequately honor the gift of an amethyst sunset or the fragility of a butterfly’s dance?  Abundantly increase these gifts so that we may be more faithful stewards of Your entire creation.  To You be all honor and glory.  Amen.

SONG: In Christ Alone

SERMON:  COMMANDMENTS 5 and 6: Loving Others

Honor your father and your mother. (Exodus 20:12)

“Honor your father and mother that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Ephesians 6:2-

Do not kill. (Exodus 20:13).

The authorities don’t frighten people who are doing the right thing. Rather, they frighten people who are doing wrong. Would you rather not be afraid of authority? Romans 13:3

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it well.”  Psalm 139:13-14.

“You have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago, Don’t commit murder, and all who commit murder will be in danger of judgment. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with their brother or sister will be in danger of judgment. If they say to their brother or sister, ‘You idiot,’ they will be in danger of being condemned by the governing council. And if they say, ‘You fool,’ they will be in danger of fiery hell.” (Matthew 5:21-22)

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44)

.SONG: Rock of Ages

6-25-17 EXODUS: Deliverance (VBS Celebration)

WELCOME …welcome to CMUMC!!  It’s been a GREAT week as we served about 58 children who now KNOW what it feels like to catch the amazing wave of God’s love and we couldn’t do VBS without our incredible adult volunteers and our incredible adults! Now, the children will share what they learned …

The theme of the week is that GOD IS MAZING …

Remember that the Lord is great and awesome! Nehemiah 4:14b

In the creation story we learned GOD CREATES

In the Moses story, we learned GOD HELPS …Our MISSION last week was to collect CHANGE for the Methodist Children’s home and the kids were INCREDIBLE – many took money out of their OWN piggy banks! So far we’ve collected about $300 and it’s not too late to drop a check or cash in the sand pails today!!

On Wednesday we learned the story of Jesus’ baptism, we learned God LOVES

Then we learned that when Jesus calmed the storm, GOD CALMS

And finally, we saw that after Jesus died he was resurrected but before He went to heaven he told us WE were to do His work now – we learned that GOD SENDS

SONGS: Moses Song (Come Thou Fount)

Go Down Moses

OFFERING Loving God, we thank You. We thank You for your creation, the gift of Your son, and for Your presence in our lives. We recognize that You are greater than any of our attempts to describe You and we have come to a time in the service to say “thank you” with our economic resources — our money. May everything we do in this worship service express gratitude — the songs that we sing, the prayers that we offer, the words that we read, the conversations that we have, and even these gifts that we now make to spread the good news of Your son, Jesus Christ. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

“On the way, [back to Egypt] at a place where they spent the night, the LORD met him and tried to kill him”. Ex. 4:24

God KNOWS it won’t be easy because he tells Moses what He will say to Pharoah …‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my oldest son. I said to you, “Let my son go so he could worship me.” But you refused to let him go. As a result, now I’m going to kill your oldest son.’” Ex. 4:22-23

“This is what the LORD, Israel’s God, says: ‘Let my people go so that they can hold a festival for me in the desert.’” SLIDE But Pharaoh said, “Who is this LORD whom I’m supposed to obey by letting Israel go? I don’t know this LORD, and I certainly won’t let Israel go.” Ex. 5:1-2

Make the men’s work so hard that it’s all they can do, and they can’t focus on these empty lies. (Ex. 5:9)

“My Lord, why have you abused this people? Why did you send me for this? Ever since I first came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has abused this people. And you’ve done absolutely nothing to rescue your people.” The LORD replied to Moses, “Now you will see what I’ll do to Pharaoh. In fact, he’ll be so eager to let them go that he’ll drive them out of his land by force.” (Exodus 5:22-23; 6:1)

Pharaoh “hardened his heart” (Ex. 8:15) and would not let the people go; but when we come to the second five plagues, we read that “the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh” (Ex. 9:12)
which kept him from relenting.

At midnight the LORD struck down all the first offspring in the land of Egypt. . . . A terrible cry of agony rang out across Egypt because every house had someone in it who had died. SLIDE Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron that night and said, “Get up! Get away from my people, both you and the Israelites! Go!” (Ex. 12:29-31)

The early church saw the slaughter of the lambs used at Passover as heralding the death of Jesus, speaking of

“Christ our Passover lamb” (1 Cor. 5:7) “who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29)!

This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me”; and taking the cup, he said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:19-20).

Like Moses,we too are called by God to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. To speak against injustice and inequality, to speak against the political and economic powers of this world which continue to enslave the poor and the powerless.

And, like Moses, we do not go alone, but in the strength of God who calls and sends us.So go from here in confidence and hope, knowing that the great I AM goes with you.

SONG: 10,000 reasons

“One day after Moses had become an adult, he went out among his people and he saw their forced labor.” Exodus 2:11

Moses, in fear, ran away from Pharaoh and settled down in the land of Midian. One day Moses was sitting by a well. Now there was a Midianite priest who had seven daughters. The daughters came to draw water and fill the troughs so that their father’s flock could drink. But some shepherds came along and rudely chased them away. Moses got up, rescued the women, and gave their flock water to drink. (Exodus 2:15-17)

A long time passed, and the Egyptian king died. The Israelites were still groaning because of their hard work. They cried out, and their cry to be rescued from the hard work rose up to God. God heard their cry of grief, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God looked at the Israelites, and God understood. (Exodus 2:23-25)

“Don’t come any closer! Take off your sandals, because you are standing on holy ground.” (Exodus 3:5)

“I’ve clearly seen my people oppressed in Egypt. I’ve heard their cry of injustice because of their slave masters. I know about their pain. I’ve come down to rescue them from the Egyptians. So get going. I’m sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.” (Exodus 3:6-8, 10)

“Who am I to go to Pharaoh and to bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” God said, “I’ll be with you.” (Exodus 3:11-12)

“But what if they don’t believe me or pay attention to me? They might say to me, ‘The LORD didn’t appear to you!’” (Exodus 4:1)

“My Lord, I’ve never been able to speak well, … I have a slow mouth and a thick tongue. I’ll help you speak, and I’ll teach you what you should say.” (Exodus 4:10-12)

“Please, my Lord, just send someone else” ( Exodus 4:13).

SONG: Here I Am Lord

God, just as You called Moses so long ago, so You call each one of us to speak and act on Your behalf in our world today.  Forgive us when we are hesitant to follow: when we question Your call or make excuses for our abilities; when we complain about our lack of time or hoard our resources. Give us courage to step out in faith, to follow where You lead without hesitation or fear, trusting that Your presence goes with us, and that You will provide all that we need. Amen.
