Call to Worship – CATHY PARTRIDGE

Every angels seems to use “do not be afraid” as an opening line. But perhaps no one needed to hear it more than Joseph. What was happening to him was the stuff that ruins ives. As a man in that tie, he had all the rights to abandon Mary and preserve his dignity when he learned of her pregnancy. The stakes were high. But the angel’s message of encouragement was to see a difficult circumstance not with dread, but with joy.

All Sing:
There are angels among us that may not meet the eye
There are messages of joy coming from a choir on high
But don’t just look up
for the way God works
is to plant more joy right here on earth just like it was at Jesus birth.

There are angels among us, there are angels among us bringing joy on earth.

Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
All Pray:
Holy Living God, Blessed Jesus, Guiding Spirit,
alight within us your flame of JOY this day.
Grant us openness to hear your message.
Grant us courage to be your messengers in the world, creating more joy in the midst of fear.

Leader: And with the angel messengers above us, among us and within us, we sing . . .

Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid

Advent Candles – COE FAMILY

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

“She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.

Today we give thanks for the Josephs among us, who bring to us surprising new visions of joy, who challenge us to think outside the box, who show us a future we never anticipated.

God sent himself to us to bring us life and never-ending joy. Today, as we celebrate Advent and think of joy, let us not forget. Let us remember and live each day in the knowledge and understanding of what God has done for us.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel! We are joyful!

On this Third Sunday of Advent, we re-light the candles of HOPE and PEACE, and we light the third candle of JOY as a symbol of those who remind of us what may be, and renew our faith.

Now, we invite you to pass the joy of Christ with your neighbors, for each time we connect with one another, joy grows.

Call to Worship – Cathy Partridge

Last week we witnessed Zechariah freaking out when the other-worldly angel creature appeared to him at the altar of the temple. But Mary was simply “perplexed” by her encounter with an angel. Why would such an incredible message come to a common girl just barely a woman? Then her reply to such a foretelling about her purpose in life was also simple: “Let it be so.” For nothing is impossible with God.

SONG: There are angels among us . . .

Holy Living God, Blessed Jesus, Guiding Spirit,
alight within us your flame of peace this day.
Grant us openness to hear your message.
Grant us courage to be your messengers in the world, creating more peace in the midst of fear.

And with the angel messengers above us, among us and within us, we sing . . .

Leader: The angels that appear in the story of Jesus’ birth would have been very comfortable in our world of tweets and hashtags. Their messages were often short and to the point–their favorite line being #DoNotBeAfraid. As we look at the stories of these winged messengers to Zechariah, Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds, we will contemplate what messages we can offer that will fly in the face of a culture of fear and bring more hope, more peace, more joy, and more love to the world.

We begin with an angelic visit to Zechariah. It was just another day at the temple for Zechariah. It was his priestly turn to make sure everything was done properly and in good order. But it turned into something quite different when an angel showed up at the altar.

“There are angels among us that may not meet the eye
There are messages of hope coming from a choir on high
But don’t just look up;
for the way God works
is to plant more hope right here on earth
just like it was with Jesus birth.
There are angels among us,
there are angels among us, t
here are angels among us,
bringing hope on earth.
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid

Holy Living God, Blessed Jesus, Guiding Spirit,
alight within us your flame of hope this day.
Grant us openness to hear your message.
Grant us courage to be your messengers in the world,
creating more hope in the midst of fear.

Pastor: And with the angel messengers above us, among us and within us, we sing (or say)…

Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid

Lighting of Advent Candle – HOPE

Reader 1: What is hope? Modern culture tells us it is a “maybe,” a kind of unsure optimism. But in Scripture, hope is an indication of certainty. “Hope” means “a strong and confident expectation.”

The Israelites were hoping for a savior, their messiah. God had promised a messiah and they believed it. They didn’t know when or who, but they were waiting.

Zechariah was a Levite in the nation of Israel. He worked in the temple and was a God-fearing man. He and his wife, Elizabeth, were childless in a culture where children were considered to be a sign of God’s blessing. Zechariah had prayed and prayed to God, asking for a child, but God had not sent one. As Zechariah stood in the Holy of Holies that day, preparing to offer the sacrifices for the people, an angel appeared to him with a message from God:

Reader 2: Fear not, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son. You are to name him John. He will be a joy and delight to you and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord his God. He is never to take wine or fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. And he will go before the Lord to make ready a people.

Reader 1: But when Zechariah heard Gabriel’s words, his first reaction was not hope. It was doubt. He asked the angel, “But how can this be? I am an old man!” The angel responded,

Reader 2: I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.

Reader 1: Elizabeth did become pregnant, and Zechariah found himself wholeheartedly living in hope, in confident expectation that God would give him a son and that the long-awaited Messiah was soon to follow.

Today we too can live with Zechariah’s hope. We can live with the certainty and the confident expectation that Christ not only came to this world as a baby so long ago, but he will return and everything that God has promised will come true. What hope!

On this first Sunday of Advent, we light this candle as a symbol HOPE. (light one purple candle.)

Passing of the Peace

I invite you to pass the HOPE of Christ with your neighbors, for each time we connect with one another, hope grows!

Greeting and Church-wide Announcements – JASON DAVIS

A warm welcome to all, members and visitors, as we celebrate this season of Thanksgiving. As we gather, we proclaim that the long-ago feast of Pilgrims and Native Americans proved to be a symbol of our common membership in the human race. And was a living representation of our calling “to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God.” Today we are reminded to be thankful to God for all the blessings that have been lavished on us.

Friday morning “Bible Talk” will resume this coming Friday, November 17th, 9-10am
2 more “Pie with the Pastor” opportunities. Sign up in the kitchen.

SONGS: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
My Holy Shepherd
SERMON: Searching for the Perfect Church
“I know your works, your labor, and your endurance. I also know that you don’t put up with those who are evil. You have tested those who say they are apostles but are not, and you have found them to be liars. You have shown endurance and put up with a lot for my name’s sake, and you haven’t gotten tired.
But I have this against you: you have let go of the love you had at first. So remember the high point from which you have fallen. Rev. 2:2-5a
“… seek 1st the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” Matthew 6:33
God’s condemnation of Eli, these words stuck out: “you… honor your sons above me” I Samuel 2:29
Jesus said something like that:“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Matthew 10:37

Change your hearts and lives and do the things you did at first. If you don’t, I’m coming to you. I will move your lampstand from its place if you don’t change your hearts and lives. If you can hear, listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. I will allow those who emerge victorious to eat from the tree of life, which is in God’s paradise. Revelation 25:2-7.

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. Rev. 22:2-3
BENEDICTION: Let the majesty of the Father be the light by which we walk,
the compassion of the Son be the love by which we walk,
the presence of the Spirit be the power by which we walk. AMEN

SONG: I am the Church, You are the Church

Spirit of the Living God

SERMON: Searching for the Perfect Church

After their release, they returned to their brothers and sisters and reported everything the chief priests and elders had said.  They listened, then lifted their voices in unison to God in prayer.. After they prayed, the place where they were gathered was shaken. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking God’s word with confidence. Acts 4:23,31

The community of believers was one in heart and mind. None of them would say, “This is mine!” about any of their possessions, but held everything in common.  The apostles continued to bear powerful witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and an abundance of grace was at work among them all.  Acts 4:32-33

(1) Ephesus – hard workers, full of endurance, haven’t put up with evil BUT have forsaken its first love and forgotten the basics of what made them great to begin with … but PARADISE awaits (2:4).

 (2) Smyrna – a church that suffered hardship and hurtful things spoken about them and more suffering was yet to come BUT THEY WILL RECEIVE THE CROWN OF LIFE (Rev. 2:10)

 (3) Pergamum – they kept their faith in the midst of bad circumstances but they worshipped false idols and were sexually immoral and needed to repent BUT THEY WOULD EMERGE VICTORIOUS (2:16).

(4)Thyatira – a strong, faithful, loving church with good works and endurance but who wouldn’t condemn a false prophetess.  BUT THEY WOULD HAVE AUTHORITY OVER NATIONS. (2:20).

(5) Sardis – the church thought they were alive but were “dead; they had fallen asleep. BUT THEIR NAMES WOULD BE IN THE BOOK OF LIFE (3:2).

 (6) Philadelphia – the church that had endured patiently and done good works and kept their faith even though they had little power. THEY WILL BE PILLARS IN THE TEMPLE OF GOD  (3:10).

(7) Laodicea – the church with the lukewarm faith. BUT THEY WILL SIT WITH JESUS ON HIS THRONE (3:16).

BENEDICTION: As we go from here, help us to experience your favor, oh God! Allow us to rest in the peace that comes from the One who is, who was, and who is yet to come! To Him be glory and power, forever and ever.  Amen.
