OFFERING Loving God, Your grace provides us with secure shelter even amid our times of doubt and despair.  When our lives periodically go adrift from the refuge of Your unwavering love, lift us from the depths of selfishness and greed.  Restore our hope and help us to find contentment in You so that we may offer these financial gifts as devoted disciples of Jesus Christ.  In His name, we pray.  Amen.

SONGS: Tell Me the Stories of Jesus

Come Thou Fount

When Moses was 120 years old, the people were FINALLY ready to enter the land of milk and honey, they camped “by the Jordan across from Jericho” (Numbers 36:13) … they were in, what is now the land of JORDAN, but from the mountaintops, the Promised land, which we now know as ISREAL, was oh sooooo close!

Why was this admonition important to Moses? So that “you and your children and your children’s children may fear the LORD your God all the days of your life” (Dt. 6:2).

These words that I am commanding you today must always be on your minds. Recite them to your children. Talk about them when you are sitting around your house and when you are out and about, when you are lying down and when you are getting up. (Dt. 6:6-7)

Israel, listen! Our God is the LORD! Only the LORD! Love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your being, and all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:4-5) This is the essence of what God seeks from His people!!

Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. (Deuteronomy 34:10-12 NRSV)

 SONG: Pass it On

BENEDICTION: When it comes to scriptural benedictions, most people are familiar with this one. God specifically told Moses to pass this down to Aaron as a blessing to speak over Israel. It’s endured as a standard of benediction because it’s not only easy to remember, but it’s filled with power and beauty.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24–26

OFFERING:Loving Father, you powerfully fill the voids in our lives and You reveal your compassionate grace by the simple act of always being present.  You unselfishly feed us when we are hungry and thirsty and quietly walk with us when we feel alone.  Combine this offering with others so that all of Your children can be filled with the power of Your redeeming spirit.  In Jesus’ name, we pray.  Amen.

SONGS: Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

“They that wait upon the Lord, shall renew their strength. They shall rise up on wings like Eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31

“ALL things work together for good to those who love the Lord, who are called according to His purposes.” Romans 8:28

Oh, how we wish that the LORD had just put us to death while we were still in the land of Egypt. There we could sit by the pots cooking meat and eat our fill of bread. Instead, you’ve brought us out into this desert to starve this whole assembly to death. (Exodus 16:2-3)

“Why have you treated your servant so badly? And why haven’t I found favor in your eyes, for you have placed the burden of all these people on me? . . . I can’t bear this people on my own. They’re too heavy for me. If you’re going to treat me like this, please kill me.” (Numbers 11:11, 14-15)

“We entered the land to which you sent us. It’s actually full of milk and honey, and this is its fruit. There are, however, [don’t you hate that word!] powerful people who live in the land. The cities have huge fortifications” (Exodus 13:27-28).

“We can’t go up against the people because they are stronger than we . . . All the people we saw in it are huge men  . . . We saw ourselves as grasshoppers, and that’s how we appeared to them.” (Number 13:30-33)

“Take the staff, and … speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.”  “So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as He commanded him and said ‘Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?’ Then…he raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.” Numbers 20:9-11

“Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them” (Numbers 20:12).

For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 1 Corinthians 10:4

Refreshing, renewing, resurrecting Lord of the waters,

ALL: Forgive me.

Forgive us for becoming stagnant in our spiritual lives. What once were living waters has now become dark and dirty, certainly not clean enough to drink.

ALL: Forgive me.

Forgive us when we rush the rapids so violently from one task to the next and never see the scenery or hear Your voice above our own foamy waters and roaring waves.

ALL: Forgive me.

Forgive us when our banks overflow by taking on too many things that replace You as our priority, threatening to drown those around us with all our selfishness.

ALL: Forgive me.

Forgive us for not returning to You when we dry up, trickle, barely move in the dusty dry cracks of our own river beds.

ALL: Forgive me.

Fill our dead, empty pools with abundant life again.

ALL: Refresh us.

Slow our rapids to the pace You intend.

ALL: Renew us.

Train our tributaries to flow from You and not the chaos of stormy life.

ALL: Restore us.

Show us where You want us to go.

ALL: Redirect us.

Resurrecting Lord of the waters, hear our repentant prayer in this moment of silence we pray. SILENCE

People of God: the Good Lord of the Waters has heard your prayer. May the peace of Christ be upon you now. Amen.

SONG: LET US BREAK BREAD TOGETHER: Jason will get the children will return to sanctuary

COMMUNION: Breaking of the Bread

BENEDICTION: God of the covenant, we give thanks for your enduring presence in our lives. Help us to be aware that you are with us in our wilderness wanderings and please, Lord, walk alongside us, both in our wanderings and as we seek to be ever closer to the Promised Land. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen

– The 5th  Sunday Pot Luck will finally be here in 2 weeks and we hope everyone will plan to bring something to share and stay for a wonderful lunch!

– One last thing – Shara is working with the counselors at the school to get a list of families who need a little help with back to school supplies this year … we should have the name for next week but if you see a great sale on a backpack, grab it and you can pick an age appropriate tag when they’re ready.

OFFERING … Almighty God, Your boundless miracles in nature are such a small display of Your awesome deeds.  You visibly enrich our lives with the bounty of the earth’s beauty.  How can we ever adequately honor the gift of an amethyst sunset or the fragility of a butterfly’s dance?  Abundantly increase these gifts so that we may be more faithful stewards of Your entire creation.  To You be all honor and glory.  Amen.

SONG: In Christ Alone

SERMON:  COMMANDMENTS 5 and 6: Loving Others

Honor your father and your mother. (Exodus 20:12)

“Honor your father and mother that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Ephesians 6:2-

Do not kill. (Exodus 20:13).

The authorities don’t frighten people who are doing the right thing. Rather, they frighten people who are doing wrong. Would you rather not be afraid of authority? Romans 13:3

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it well.”  Psalm 139:13-14.

“You have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago, Don’t commit murder, and all who commit murder will be in danger of judgment. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with their brother or sister will be in danger of judgment. If they say to their brother or sister, ‘You idiot,’ they will be in danger of being condemned by the governing council. And if they say, ‘You fool,’ they will be in danger of fiery hell.” (Matthew 5:21-22)

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44)

.SONG: Rock of Ages

6-25-17 EXODUS: Deliverance (VBS Celebration)

WELCOME …welcome to CMUMC!!  It’s been a GREAT week as we served about 58 children who now KNOW what it feels like to catch the amazing wave of God’s love and we couldn’t do VBS without our incredible adult volunteers and our incredible adults! Now, the children will share what they learned …

The theme of the week is that GOD IS MAZING …

Remember that the Lord is great and awesome! Nehemiah 4:14b

In the creation story we learned GOD CREATES

In the Moses story, we learned GOD HELPS …Our MISSION last week was to collect CHANGE for the Methodist Children’s home and the kids were INCREDIBLE – many took money out of their OWN piggy banks! So far we’ve collected about $300 and it’s not too late to drop a check or cash in the sand pails today!!

On Wednesday we learned the story of Jesus’ baptism, we learned God LOVES

Then we learned that when Jesus calmed the storm, GOD CALMS

And finally, we saw that after Jesus died he was resurrected but before He went to heaven he told us WE were to do His work now – we learned that GOD SENDS

SONGS: Moses Song (Come Thou Fount)

Go Down Moses

OFFERING Loving God, we thank You. We thank You for your creation, the gift of Your son, and for Your presence in our lives. We recognize that You are greater than any of our attempts to describe You and we have come to a time in the service to say “thank you” with our economic resources — our money. May everything we do in this worship service express gratitude — the songs that we sing, the prayers that we offer, the words that we read, the conversations that we have, and even these gifts that we now make to spread the good news of Your son, Jesus Christ. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

“On the way, [back to Egypt] at a place where they spent the night, the LORD met him and tried to kill him”. Ex. 4:24

God KNOWS it won’t be easy because he tells Moses what He will say to Pharoah …‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my oldest son. I said to you, “Let my son go so he could worship me.” But you refused to let him go. As a result, now I’m going to kill your oldest son.’” Ex. 4:22-23

“This is what the LORD, Israel’s God, says: ‘Let my people go so that they can hold a festival for me in the desert.’” SLIDE But Pharaoh said, “Who is this LORD whom I’m supposed to obey by letting Israel go? I don’t know this LORD, and I certainly won’t let Israel go.” Ex. 5:1-2

Make the men’s work so hard that it’s all they can do, and they can’t focus on these empty lies. (Ex. 5:9)

“My Lord, why have you abused this people? Why did you send me for this? Ever since I first came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has abused this people. And you’ve done absolutely nothing to rescue your people.” The LORD replied to Moses, “Now you will see what I’ll do to Pharaoh. In fact, he’ll be so eager to let them go that he’ll drive them out of his land by force.” (Exodus 5:22-23; 6:1)

Pharaoh “hardened his heart” (Ex. 8:15) and would not let the people go; but when we come to the second five plagues, we read that “the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh” (Ex. 9:12)
which kept him from relenting.

At midnight the LORD struck down all the first offspring in the land of Egypt. . . . A terrible cry of agony rang out across Egypt because every house had someone in it who had died. SLIDE Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron that night and said, “Get up! Get away from my people, both you and the Israelites! Go!” (Ex. 12:29-31)

The early church saw the slaughter of the lambs used at Passover as heralding the death of Jesus, speaking of

“Christ our Passover lamb” (1 Cor. 5:7) “who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29)!

This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me”; and taking the cup, he said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:19-20).

Like Moses,we too are called by God to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. To speak against injustice and inequality, to speak against the political and economic powers of this world which continue to enslave the poor and the powerless.

And, like Moses, we do not go alone, but in the strength of God who calls and sends us.So go from here in confidence and hope, knowing that the great I AM goes with you.

SONG: 10,000 reasons

“One day after Moses had become an adult, he went out among his people and he saw their forced labor.” Exodus 2:11

Moses, in fear, ran away from Pharaoh and settled down in the land of Midian. One day Moses was sitting by a well. Now there was a Midianite priest who had seven daughters. The daughters came to draw water and fill the troughs so that their father’s flock could drink. But some shepherds came along and rudely chased them away. Moses got up, rescued the women, and gave their flock water to drink. (Exodus 2:15-17)

A long time passed, and the Egyptian king died. The Israelites were still groaning because of their hard work. They cried out, and their cry to be rescued from the hard work rose up to God. God heard their cry of grief, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God looked at the Israelites, and God understood. (Exodus 2:23-25)

“Don’t come any closer! Take off your sandals, because you are standing on holy ground.” (Exodus 3:5)

“I’ve clearly seen my people oppressed in Egypt. I’ve heard their cry of injustice because of their slave masters. I know about their pain. I’ve come down to rescue them from the Egyptians. So get going. I’m sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.” (Exodus 3:6-8, 10)

“Who am I to go to Pharaoh and to bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” God said, “I’ll be with you.” (Exodus 3:11-12)

“But what if they don’t believe me or pay attention to me? They might say to me, ‘The LORD didn’t appear to you!’” (Exodus 4:1)

“My Lord, I’ve never been able to speak well, … I have a slow mouth and a thick tongue. I’ll help you speak, and I’ll teach you what you should say.” (Exodus 4:10-12)

“Please, my Lord, just send someone else” ( Exodus 4:13).

SONG: Here I Am Lord

God, just as You called Moses so long ago, so You call each one of us to speak and act on Your behalf in our world today.  Forgive us when we are hesitant to follow: when we question Your call or make excuses for our abilities; when we complain about our lack of time or hoard our resources. Give us courage to step out in faith, to follow where You lead without hesitation or fear, trusting that Your presence goes with us, and that You will provide all that we need. Amen.

SONGS: Down to the River to Pray

Guide Me Great Jehovah   127, 3 verses

TITHES/OFFERINGS …Almighty God, we gather in the name of the One to whom all authority is given – Jesus Christ.  As we offer You this money, You ask us to renew our commitment to be Your faith-filled disciples.   May our lifestyles reflect a desire to be in mission for others.  In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we pray.  Amen.

SONG:  Spirit Song, 347

SERMON: A Strange Beginning

“No prophet like Moses has yet emerged in Israel; Moses knew the LORD face-to-face!” (Deuteronomy 34:10).

Israelites who had fled to Egypt during days of famine had lived peacefully and SLIDE were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them. (Exodus 1:6-7)

But a NEW Pharaoh came to power who was AFRAID that the Israelites would join their enemies of war broke out so the Egyptians enslaved the Israelites into forced work gangs of cruel labor and they were harassed terribly. (Exodus 1:9-11)

“When you are helping the Hebrew women give birth and you see the baby being born, if it’s a boy, kill him. But if it’s a girl, you can let her live.” (Exodus 1:15-16)

“Now the two midwives respected God so they didn’t obey the Egyptian king’s order. Instead, they let the baby boys live” (Exodus 1:17).

“So God treated the midwives well, and the people kept on multiplying and became very strong. And because the midwives respected God, God gave them households of their own” (Exodus 1:20-21).

“Throw every baby boy born to the Hebrews into the Nile River, but you can let all the girls live” (1:22). In fear, He called the entire Egyptian population to tear children from their mother’s arms and drown them in the Nile and this is the horrific context for the story of Moses’ birth!

SONG: Great is Thy Faithfulness 140

May the Father’s enduring love accompany us in our lives;

may Jesus himself strengthen us to be co-builders of His kingdom;

and may the Spirit indwell and inspire us on our journey. Amen.

SONG: Give Me Jesus

“God’s grace is not like thin air, hard to breath like the atmosphere on a high mountaintop, but His grace is thick and rich and dense and everywhere  so that we are breathing it in before we know about it!” Rev. Dean Snyder
The bible describes this prevenient grace as The true light … that enlightens everyone. John 1: 9

“We love because God first loved us.’” I John 4:19

Saul fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Acts 9:4

hen it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, he called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me. (Galatians 1:15)
For God chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he appointed us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— SLIDE to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. Ephesian 4:4-8

COMMUNION … If you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and have asked forgiveness of you sins, you are welcome at HIS table of Grace … this is not a METHODIST TABLE but the LORD’S table. In this moment of silence, turn your sin over to the Lord who paid the PRICE for those sins on the cross for you

The Lord be with you.
ALL: And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
AL: We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
AL: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing,
always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life.
When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast.
You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God,
and spoke to us through your prophets.
And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
ALL: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory,
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ.
Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor,
to proclaim release to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
and to announce that the time had come

when you would save your people.

He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners.
By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection
you gave birth to your Church,
delivered us from slavery to sin and death,
and made with us a new covenant by water and the spirit.
When the Lord Jesus ascended he promised to be with us always,

in the power of your Word and Holy Spirit.

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,
we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving
as a holy and living sacrifice,
in union with Christ’s offering for us,
as we proclaim the mystery of faith:

ALL: Christ has died;
Christ is risen;
Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here,
and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ,
one with each other,
and one in ministry to all the world,
until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

Through your Son Jesus Christ,
with your Holy Spirit in your Holy Church,
all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father,  now and forever.

ALL: Because there is one loaf,
we, though we be many, are one body,
for we all partake of the one loaf.
The bread which we break,
it is a means of sharing in the body of Christ!

ALL: And the cup over which we give thanks,
it is a means of sharing in the out poured blood of Christ!

This is the joyful feast of unity! Christ has gathered His people around the earth to commune at this table. Across political lines and economic lines, in places of powerfully protected affluence, and among the poorest of the poor, we share a meal, remembering and celebrating Jesus Christ.

ALL: And so, we come: we come with our doubts, our hopes, our inadequacies and with our strengths. We come, for this is the Lord’s table of GRACE where all are invited and all are welcome. AMEN

SONG: Blessed Assurance

We go now, to love one another, because love is from God. We proclaim God’s salvation to every generation and remain in Jesus Christ, like branches of a vine, drawing our life from Him. May God the vine grower make us fruitful; may Christ Jesus abide in us and give us life; and may the Holy Spirit cast out all fear and fill us with God’s love.  We go in peace to love and serve the Lord, in the name of Christ. Amen.

SONG: 154-155 All Hail The Power of Jesus Name

20 Breathe on Me Breath of God

SERMON: Dead End

Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.” John 11:9-10

“I am the resurrection and the life.  Those who believe in me, though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”  John 11:25-26

“Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!  This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’” (Ezekiel 37:4-6).  And AMAZINGLY, when Ezekiel spoke God’s words, “and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.” Ezekiel 37:10

Restore us, O Living God, by the breath of your Spirit. We are wilted and weary on this journey toward Easter, anxious for restoration to come once and for all.  Hear our voices crying out amidst the ashes, where we hide to wait for a new day. But let us not be bound to the earth by our weariness and tears, but rather swirled about and lifted up by the wonder of your life within us! Revive us, O LORD! There are palms to wave and crosses to carry and Easter eggs to find! There is praise to give and work to be done and surprising life to nurture!
No matter our tired bones, you are not finished! By your goodness and grace, we  are not finished!

In this moment of silence, please ask God to forgive you of YOUR sins …  AMEN

In the name of Jesus, you are forgiven.

People: In the name of Jesus, you are forgiven.

All: Glory to God! Amen!

Jesus calls us to the well, inviting us to drink of the Living Water, and the life eternal.

ALL: Jesus calls us out of the shadows, out of the graves, to be entirely known, and entirely filled with His presence.

Jesus calls us all: all who were made in God’s own image, all who breathe the breath of God’s spirit, the Spirit of Life.

ALL: Jesus calls us to the table, to the meal that nourishes our bodies and binds our dry bones into one Body, living in Christ.

Holy God, source of all being, you are greater by far than our human thoughts can comprehend.  With all that you have created, you abide; weeping with us in grief and pain, rejoicing with us in life and love.  You are everywhere in this very moment; holding the entirety of living experience and weaving us together in the great and intricate tapestry of Creation.

ALL: Creator God of us all, in your holy love you took on our limitations. Born of a body, bound within a body, you know the whole of this human experience.  Learning to communicate with words; teaching us to communicate with presence.  Learning the fears that wring us dry; teaching us of the love that nurtures us back to life.

Everlasting God, you are everywhere and right here.  As close as the air we breathe, the air which binds us one to another and all to your beautiful creation. You are as close as the sunlight on our skin, as close as the rain that drips from our hair; the wind and the water that push us and lead us and call us again and again into relationship with one another and with you.   Holy Spirit, divine Advocate, guide and encourage us.  Stir within our hearts, that we may made new at Your table!

ALL: Source of life, and breath, and being, breathe into the dry dust of our existence.  Nourished in body by bread and juice, may we strive for the nourishment of all bodies: may we work to end hunger in this creation that provides amply for all.  Nourished in spirit by the Body which is within our own, may we strive for the incorporation of all: may we work to break the barriers that divide us from one another and from you.  In the love that sustains us, and the Spirit that animates us, may we give all thanks and praise to you, O God of all.  Amen.

O God, accept and bless these gifts which we offer in response to the gracious gift of your life-giving Spirit to us.  May these gifts and our lives be used to flesh out your love and justice, mercy and peace as they are revealed in and through Jesus, your Son and our Savior.  Amen

COMMUNION: Breaking of the Bread/Blessing of the Cup

SONG: 206 I want to Walk as a Child of the Light

Thank you, Jesus, for feeding us at Your banquet table! You have provided living water to a woman at a well, and You provide that water to us! You have called sinners like Nicodemus to believe in You and You have called us too! You have healed the blind, and you heal us too! You have restored our lives and invigorated our faith by Your presence and we believe – You are the resurrection and the life!

In the power of the Holy Spirit, send us forth, unbound in body, mind, and spirit, to proclaim our faith to those who do not know Your love! Amen.

SONG: Open My Eyes That I May See

CONFESSION and PARDON: Holy Jesus, we confess that we fail to question our own sightlessness. Being so sure that we “see,” we miss the truths you would teach us. With your love, cure this blindness. Open our eyes to our own misunderstandings, our own failures and our own faults. In this silence, make our faults known to us and help us to diminish them with the light of your grace. Thank you Lord, for your forgiveness, for it is only when we see ourselves clearly that we can worship you truly. In the name of Jesus, we pray, AMEN

OFFERING Generous God, you tenderly care for each person you have created. You miraculously restore people to health, and shine light into the lives of those who are discouraged. Guide us so that we will not regard others according to outward appearances but seek to find your love in their hearts. We dedicate our offerings and ourselves to contribute to the work of your kingdom on earth until Christ returns in glory. Amen. (1 Samuel 16:1-13)

SONG: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

In 1 Samuel 16:1–13 the prophet Samuel goes to Bethlehem to anoint a king, one who doesn’t seem to have much going for him except his

reddish brown hair, beautiful eyes, and good-looking appearance. 1 Samuel 1:12

The Lord said, “That’s the one. Go anoint him.” So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him right there in front of his brothers. The Lord’s spirit came over David from that point forward. 1 Samuel 1:13

They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I see.” Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided.

So, they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” He said, “He is a prophet.” (John 9:13–17)

SONG: Amazing Grace, My Chains are Gone
