BEATITUDES: Happiness Within or Without?

The Beatitudes

Matthew 5 When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain. After he sat down his disciples came to him. Then he began to teach them by saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely on account of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.

Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its flavor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people. 14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honor to your Father in heaven.

    GOSPEL of MARK: 1:1-13

9/16/12  The Gospel of Mark 1:1-13

THE ESSENCE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IS OUR CONVICTION THAT JESUS IS THE UNIQUE SON OF GOD. Christians down through the ages have struggled to maintain this balance, between his humanity and his deity and whenever the humanity of Jesus eclipses his deity or his deity eclipses his humanity, distortion and imbalance is soon to follow. We must maintain this balance to stay biblical!!  Make no mistake … without Jesus as Messiah and Son of God, fully human and fully God, there is no gospel of Jesus!  Mark’s prologue reminds us that Jesus Christ is the very foundation on which we stand!   CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE MAX McLEAN VIDEO

    GOSPEL of MARK: Introduction
THE GOSPEL of MARK Today we embark on a deep journey into the Gospel of Mark, a gospel written to prove that Jesus Christ is the Messiah!  In a dramatic and action-packed sequence of events, Mark paints a striking image of Jesus Christ and illustrates who Jesus is as a person, a human being. The book is a sort of pithy, short, fast-paced rollercoaster ride that begins by dropping us into the River Jordan with John the Baptist and doesn't pause for breath until we reach the empty tomb. Come ... join us!

HAPPY HOUR: The Rest of the Story …

8/22/12  The Rest of the Story ...

I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, "Look, God's home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.  He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever." Revelation 21:3-4 Think of a time in your life when you were so scared or sad you cried.  Perhaps it was when you were very young.  Perhaps it was when you were not so young.  Perhaps it was yesterday.  Was there someone there to wipe the tears from your  eyes?  Was there someone there to comfort and reassure you?  If there was, you know how comforting that was, you know how much that meant to you.  If not, you know how much that compounded the hurt even more!

GOSPEL on BROADWAY: Loving the Unlovable (Beauty & the Beast)

8/18/12  Loving the Unlovable (Beauty and the Beast)

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8 The reason the Beauty and the Beast is so profound, because actually it’s MORE than a fairy tale – it actually reflects the message of the gospel!  It’s a message that says SLIDE "I’m determined to love those who are unlovable." And that is exactly the kind of love that the gospel not only demonstrates but also calls each one of us to live out! 8-12-12  Shocking Grace, Mercy & Forgiveness:               Les Miserables

Luke 7:44-47 Are you more like Inspector Jarvart – judging people because of their past or their station in life – intenet on keeping the rules and overlooking the human heart…or are you like Valjean – who understands forgiveness, and knows that people CAN change with God’s grace?  I wish I could tell you the choice is easy – it isn’t!  But I truly believe when we are faced with these ethical decisions, God will CLEARLY light the right path!!! HAPPY HOUR: Faith Olympics

    8-12-12  FAITH OLYMPICS

And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us…fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. SLIDE For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrew 12:1-3 Your odds of winning the gold in a race that matters a WHOLE lot more than ANY Olympic event got a WHOLE lot better because of what happened on  Calvary a few thousand years ago!  When Jesus went to the cross for us he opened up the FAITH OLYMPICS for every single person on the planet!!  And while he told us we’d have to work hard … and it wouldn’t always be easy … and we’d have to persevere, he also told us we would ALL step to the winner’s platform … not for a bronze medal or a silver medal … no WAY my friends! You are stepping to the podium to receive the gold medal of eternal joy with Jesus Christ himself!! CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO

HAPPY HOUR: My Grace is All you Need

8/8/12   My Grace is All you need!

2 Cor. 12:9 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Notice that the Lord did not say to him, "My grace will prove to be sufficient," nor "I will give you enough grace to get through." No!  What he’s saying is  "Paul, I will allow this thorn to remain, but I want you to understand that at each moment from now on there will be ample provision for your every need … don’t worry … my grace will be sufficient for you."
